had a hope that this one, perhaps, might be an empty number. another area code he might eliminate calls from. another area he might lodge a block against. (but, they had come in one after another. they had flooded in, in the passing of days. multiplying steadily, slowly. each recorded and each taken down. one at a time. two at a time. three.)

and he had a hope this one would not connect. might, in the coming of hours, reveal another piece of the puzzle. another clue that might help to stop the barrage. to cease the barrage. to cut connect, entirely.)

[ she picks up, surprised; she doesn't know this number, and it's not often at all she gets calls from people she doesn't know. ]

Ah-- hello? This is Kaname Madoka... can I help you?

[ -- he had a hope it wouldn't connect again. but, there's almost a heavy pause. a kind of awkward start of words, left in silence. nudged under corners of thought or thought of conversation. the half-sound of something that sounds like leather (gloves?) shifting around the body of the phone. ]

... It's a wrong number. [ and his voice is quiet. boyish. a stark juxtaposition to words. none which he adds to. seems to excuse, in some reflection of manners. seems to separate.

[ the pause lasts long enough that she almost speaks again to check that there's someone there. but as she opens her mouth, she hears his voice. stops, surprised again at the reply, which is both brusque and yet... not. ]

O-oh, I see. Um, well, there's no harm done! That sort of thing happens all the time, after all.

[ there's a small pause, this time. though it takes a different shade. though it seems to stretch out or hesitate. she's too nice. she's being too nice. she's -- and, with some thought, he selects the easiest point of escape. selects the easiest out of the conversation. of forgiveness he can't return or offer anything for. ]

[ the sound is so confident in its assurance, you can almost hear her nodding. ] There's so many phone numbers out there now, everyone's bound to call the wrong person at least once! At least, that's what I think.
